The unproven legend says: Gustav Mahler had Charles Ives’ 3rd symphony with him as a score on his last crossing of the Atlantic towards Vienna. Not only Thomas Hampson understands both masters as witnesses to a fundamental upheaval process, which probably finds its correspondence in our immediate present time.
