MaerzMusik – Occam Océan

March 23, 20.00 - 23.00

Philharmonie, Kammermusiksaal, Berlin, Germany

Éliane Radigue’s first orchestral work “Occam Océan” marks the third creative period of the music pioneer and is also an example of collective knowledge transfer through oral and auditory tradition – embodied and performed by members of Klangforum Wien together with ONCEIM.

This concert evening is dedicated to one of the greatest pieces from Éliane Radigue’s third creative period with purely instrumental compositions, also known as the “Occam” cycle. It is tempting to consider Occam Océan the opus summum of her late work, given its large cast, were it not for Radigue’s philosophy, which resists such categorization.

Radigue’s instrumental work is not only characterized by its musical quality and ability to create an accessible and collaborative listening experience between musicians and audience. It is also inimitable in his practice to keep the knowledge of the composition collective, to let it grow in an interpersonal space and to pass it on without using the authoritative gesture of writing.

In order to continue the knowledge transfer of this piece, MaerzMusik invites the renowned Klangforum Wien to perform “Occam Océan” together with ONCEIM, (l’Orchestre de Nouvelles Créations, Expérimentations et Improvisation Musicales). Members of both groups meet at the festival in Berlin to exchange ideas, listen, play and embody the living memory of “Occam Océan” together. Before joining forces, both ensembles play works from their respective repertoire, by composers Liza Lim and Patricia Bosshard.
